The RS500 was a homologation special built to keep the Sierra competitive in touring-car racing. Ford built 500 road cars with a larger turbocharger, a revised intercooler and a stronger engine block, and the racing versions went on to dominate the BTCC and the Australian touring-car championship. The whale-tail spoiler and the flared arches made it instantly recognisable. It was a homologation car in the purest sense.
