The S3 carried forward the 2.2-litre engine and adopted chassis developments shared with the Turbo Esprit. Lotus cleaned up the bodywork and improved the cabin while keeping the low nose and pop-up headlights. It was still a dramatic car to look at, but it was easier to live with. The S3 is the bridge between the original Giugiaro shape and the turbocharged cars that followed.
