A plug-in hybrid M car in SUV form

The BMW XM is a five-door sports activity vehicle with a plug-in hybrid drive system, and BMW describes it as the first BMW M original since the M1. Our catalogue lists a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid petrol (S68) drivetrain producing 644 bhp and 800 Nm, with 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and a 250 km/h limited top speed. We have not driven this model for this article. This is a desk-researched ownership guide built from the BMW Group South Africa newsroom release of September 2022, a PistonHeads used buying guide published in September 2026 and the government recall check. The release describes the car before sale, so read it as a statement of intent, and use the buying guide for what owners have reported since.

Checking the figures

BMW's release gives the M Hybrid system an overall output of 480 kW and 800 Nm of torque, made up of a combustion engine with up to 360 kW and 650 Nm plus an electric motor with up to 145 kW and 280 Nm. It states 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds but does not print a top speed. PistonHeads gives 653 hp in its text and 644 total in its specification table, with 591 lb ft, 0 to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds and a 155 mph limit, with 168 mph for cars with the M Driver's Package. The 480 kW figure converts to roughly 653 PS, which is the 644 bhp in our catalogue, and 155 mph is the 250 km/h limit. The 800 Nm and 591 lb ft figures agree. PistonHeads quotes a weight of 2,785 kg and warns that its weight and power data is hard to pin down with certainty, so treat it as relative rather than definitive. BMW says production began at its Spartanburg plant in the USA, and PistonHeads lists the car as on sale from 2023.

Engine, hybrid system and gearbox

BMW describes the 4.4-litre V8 as a newly developed unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust manifold and an optimised oil separation process. PistonHeads adds a strengthened crank and a plastic sump to save weight. The electric motor is built into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, and a pre-gearing stage raises its effective torque at the transmission input. An M Hybrid button selects between three operating modes, and BMW describes an ELECTRIC mode for travel with zero local emissions at up to 140 km/h. The 25.7 kWh battery is mounted in the underbody. BMW quotes an electric range of 82 to 88 km in the WLTP cycle and AC charging at up to 7.4 kW. PistonHeads gives 51 to 55 miles and says a later model-year update raised the charging rate to 11 kW, so check which rate the car you are viewing supports. Inspect the charging cable and the charging flap, and ask the seller how the car has been charged.

The guide reports performance inconsistencies in the lower gears, with poor or rough gearshifts when the combustion engine comes on stream or when the car moves from regenerative to mechanical braking, which more than a few owners escalated to complaints. It also notes that response to a hard throttle press at cruising speed is not textbook immediate. Test on cold and warm starts, in electric and hybrid modes, and ask for dealer records of any software updates. PistonHeads says official fuel economy figures for plug-in hybrids reflect test methods more than real driving, and that the engine alone is theoretically around 22 mpg. PistonHeads lists a braked towing capacity of 2,700 kg.

Chassis, brakes and wheels

BMW lists a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle, adaptive M suspension Professional with electronically controlled dampers, active roll stabilisation with 48 volt electric motors and Integral Active Steering, which it calls a first for an M model. An M Sport differential sits on the rear axle. Power reaches the road through the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, and drivers choose between modes including 4WD Sport, which makes it rear-biased, and 4WD Sand. PistonHeads says the weight is a lot to manage, that the ride is closer to acceptable than plush and that the car has no two-wheel-drive mode.

The M Sport brakes work with an integrated braking system that offers two pedal feel settings. Despite the strong stopping performance, PistonHeads reports a recall for loss of power assistance after owners experienced short, unexpected lunges forward as they thought the car was coming to a halt. It also mentions several electronic stability control recalls in 2023 and 2024 across a range of BMWs, one owner who reported shaking at 60 mph alongside rollover-stabilisation, chassis and steering warning lights, and a technical service bulletin for front suspension rattles, which the guide suspects came from a batch of out-of-specification anti-roll bars. The wheels are 21 inch as standard with 22 and 23 inch options. Some owners reported cracks in the 23 inch rims and were quoted more than 2,000 pounds a wheel at the time, a dated price you should confirm. The guide also notes coating loss on those rims and a heavy appetite for tyres, so inspect all four wheels and check tyre wear closely.

Body, interior and electronics

The guide describes a vehicle just over two metres wide, so measure your parking space and garage before you commit, and says wind noise from the fork-style door mirrors has been reported, with extra insulation from BMW giving no improvement in some cases. BMW North America recalled 267 cars in early 2024 over tailgate panels that could detach from their mounting structure. The XM has a boot of 527 litres with the third row down, according to PistonHeads, and wide rear accommodation that BMW calls an M Lounge.

BMW fits a Curved Display with a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display on Operating System 8, plus a head-up display. PistonHeads reports crashes of the infotainment, audio volume that jumps after an interruption to CarPlay, a recall for a possible front passenger knee airbag failure, steering column shrouds coming loose and rattles from dry hinges in the rear armrest area and rear seat vents. Test every screen function, the audio, the camera views and the driver assistance systems that BMW lists as standard.

Recalls and history

Most of the recalls in the guide come from US reporting and may not apply to UK cars. Because the car has attracted several recalls and a technical bulletin, enter the registration in the DVSA recall service and request dealer paperwork showing that all open work was completed, including braking, stability control, airbag and tailgate items where they apply to the vehicle. Ask for a full service history, battery health information if available, accident repair records and any modifications.

Buying decision

The PistonHeads verdict is that the XM was not designed for everyday UK use, that its price when new was hard to justify and that heavy depreciation now works in the buyer's favour, although it still considers the used price high compared with a used electric alternative. The guide concentrates on the early 4.4 V8 and sets aside the 3.0-litre XM 50e and the more powerful Label Red. Its price examples date from September 2026, so we have not repeated them: compare current adverts and prioritise a car with a complete history, closed recalls, even tyre wear, undamaged wheels and a hybrid system that behaves smoothly in every mode.
