The case for the Z8

The Z8 is BMW's modern masterpiece. Designed by Henrik Fisker as an homage to the fifties 507, it combined gorgeous retro styling with the E39 M5's 394hp S62 V8 and a proper six-speed manual gearbox. Produced from 1999 to 2003, just 5,703 were built, making it rarer than many supercars.

Its appeal is the particular combination of retro design and a manual V8 roadster, not a guarantee about collector values. An assessment of a used example needs to address the aluminium structure and Z8-specific components rather than concentrating only on the familiar engine family.

What it costs to run

The S62 connection can help identify some service parts and suitable engine expertise, but it does not establish the full cost of running a Z8. Obtain an inspection-led quotation covering fluids, cooling, leaks and age-related work. Price damaged lamps, bodywork or interior components separately, checking actual supply rather than assuming BMW engine familiarity solves every repair.

The aluminium spaceframe and body need careful maintenance. Check for accident damage and ensure any repairs have been done to a high standard. The folding roof is reliable but expensive to repair if it fails. Agreed-value insurance and proper storage are essential given the car's value.

Known weak points

Front suspension-tower distortion is an important model-specific inspection question. Have a specialist assess tower shape, surrounding structure, panel alignment and evidence of impact. Establish whether the documented BMW reinforcement package was fitted and what earlier inspections found. A brace is not proof that no prior distortion occurred, and a clean engine history cannot clear the structure.

The aluminium body can suffer from galvanic corrosion where it meets steel components, and paint quality on early cars was variable. The interior leather and trim wear, and the unique components are expensive. Check the roof mechanism operates smoothly and the tonneau cover fits correctly.

What to check before buying

Review the engine history and investigate overheating, abnormal noise, oil consumption and unresolved fault codes with an S62-experienced technician. This guide does not establish mandatory recent tensioner replacement for every Z8. Ask which work is recommended for this engine's condition and why, distinguishing a diagnosed repair from an optional preventative proposal and the seller's unsupported reassurance.

Check the body for accident damage and corrosion, particularly around the aluminium panels and where they meet steel. Verify the roof operates correctly and all the unique trim and interior components are present and in good condition. Provenance and a documented service history from BMW M specialists add significant value.

Market and depreciation

Compare authenticated cars by original market, steering position, structural history and completeness. Asking prices are not completed sales, and a sparse international market needs adjustments for taxes, condition and equipment. No current transaction survey was conducted here. Obtain a dated independent valuation where needed rather than treating an older guide's price band as today's market.

Obtain estimates for unresolved structural, lighting and trim work before comparing the total cost of two examples. A higher asking price does not certify a better car, and missing equipment can involve more than a simple replacement order. Design interest and limited production do not guarantee appreciation, future demand or a sale within the time an owner needs.

Who it suits

The Z8 suits an owner drawn to its design and manual V8 configuration who can arrange appropriate specialist care. Choose it for the experience and engineering it offers, not an investment label. Storage, insurance and repairs remain costs even when the car covers little distance.

If you want a modern BMW roadster to use regularly, a Z4 M40i is a better choice. The Z8 is a special car for someone who values its place in BMW history.

Alternatives

The E39 M5 shares the engine. The Porsche 911 Carrera is the period rival. The Mercedes SL55 AMG is the German alternative. The Ferrari 360 Spider is the Italian option.

The S62 V8 shared with the E39 M5 is one of BMW's great engines, and in the lighter Z8 it delivers effortless pace with a wonderful soundtrack. The six-speed manual is the only gearbox, which is central to the car's appeal. The chassis is competent rather than razor-sharp - the Z8 is a fast roadster, not a track tool - and the ride on 18-inch wheels is acceptable on good surfaces.

Henrik Fisker's design has aged superbly, and the interior with its central instruments is a highlight. Check that all the electrical features work - window mechanisms and roof hydraulics included - and that the hard top and its stand are present; they are expensive to replace. Paint and panel quality is generally good, but accident repairs on an aluminium-intensive car need expert assessment.

Test every bespoke lamp, including the neon lighting identified in published Z8 buying advice. Establish replacement or repair options before paying for a car with a failed unit. Demonstrate windows, instruments and roof equipment as well. A working lamp or roof today is useful evidence of present function, not a promise about future replacement availability or a transferable parts guarantee.

Distinguish the BMW Z8 from the Alpina Roadster V8. The BMW's six-speed manual and original 18-inch wheel specification are not the Alpina's automatic transmission and 20-inch arrangement. Identify any later wheel or suspension changes and confirm tyre suitability. An Alpina-style wheel does not establish Alpina identity or mean that every other component matches that derivative's specification.

The hardtop, its storage equipment, tools and original documents should be inventoried rather than assumed included. Check roof seals, drains and cabin moisture, and inspect tyres and brakes after long storage. Ask what maintenance continued while the car was inactive. A recent recommissioning should identify the systems assessed and the remaining work, not merely state that the engine started successfully.
