The 911 R was built for drivers who wanted the GT3 RS engine without the wing or the automatic gearbox. Porsche fitted the 4.0 litre flat-six to a six-speed manual, removed sound insulation, and offered a lightweight specification with a magnesium roof and carbon-fibre seats. It was visually understated, which made it a cult car almost immediately. Only 991 were built.
