Vue d'ensemble

This page is a catalogue summary while we rebuild it as a full ownership review. It is not yet a buying guide.

The 550 Spyder was Porsche's first purpose-built racing car, with a lightweight ladder-frame chassis, a low aluminium body and a mid-mounted flat-four engine. It achieved major class successes, including at the 1954 Mille Miglia and Carrera Panamericana. The car became forever associated with James Dean, who died in one in 1955. Only 90 were built.
