BMW M5 CS (F90)

A four-seat special, not an ordinary M5 with badges

BMW introduced the M5 CS in 2021 as a distinct F90 derivative, combining the turbocharged V8 and M xDrive formula with a specialised weight-reduction and equipment programme. Four individual seats are a material difference from the conventional rear bench. The purchase should be based on wanting those features rather than assuming that every limited-production BMW makes financial sense.

This is a desk-researched guide. We have not driven this model for this article. BMW's published specification explains the engineering changes and production context. It does not establish how a used example has been maintained or whether its seats and chassis suit a particular owner. An individual inspection and a personal fit assessment remain necessary even when the advertised mileage is very low.

Authenticate the specification

Obtain the VIN build information and compare it with the installed seats, body components, wheels and braking equipment. A badge or decorative plaque is not sufficient authentication. Do not assume an individually numbered build plaque exists simply because production was limited; establish identity through reliable records and the vehicle itself rather than an unsupported accessory claim.

Ask whether original components have been replaced, refinished or retained separately. A standard M5 fitted with some CS-style parts is not an equivalent car. Conversely, a genuine CS with changes needs an accurate description of its present configuration. For insurance and valuation, identify the modifications and their documentation instead of treating the original factory list as a complete description forever.

Carbon parts and structural condition

Inspect the lightweight body components, underside and mounting areas for damage. A carbon-fibre panel needs assessment appropriate to its construction; cosmetic appearance does not clear an underlying structural concern. Obtain repair invoices, photographs and an explanation of the method used if an incident occurred. The inspector should distinguish a replaceable cosmetic part from damage affecting the load-bearing vehicle.

Check panel alignment, suspension attachment areas and evidence of repairs around sensors or lighting. Ask about calibration after relevant bodywork or glass replacement. An unrecorded privately funded repair may not appear on a history check, so physical assessment still matters. Establish availability and cost for any damaged model-specific part rather than guessing from an ordinary M5 equivalent.

Engine and transmission

Review servicing of the V8, cooling-system work, correct fluids and any warning or overheating history. A capable specialist should investigate leaks and stored faults rather than clearing them for collection. Request the original diagnosis where repairs are claimed. A completed service or one replaced component is not assurance that every other internal system has been assessed.

Test the automatic from cold and when warm, including reverse and low-speed movement. Review driveline maintenance and inspect the M xDrive components with tyre suitability in mind. Unusual shifts, noise or vibration need a diagnosis. Avoid applying a universal fluid interval from another vehicle or promising a software reset will resolve a fault whose cause has not been established.

Brakes, tyres and chassis

The brake system deserves specialist condition assessment and a written estimate for any work due. Carbon-ceramic components should not be judged only through a glance at thickness or priced as ordinary steel discs. Ask which condition criteria were used and whether damage, wear or prior use affects the recommendation. Resolve uncertainty before a purchase budget assumes those components need no near-term spending.

Inspect wheel damage, tyre age, exact fitment and wear pattern. Assess suspension and alignment rather than treating unusual wear as inevitable. The CS's focused specification does not make it immune to pothole damage or poor setup. If it has been driven on circuits, obtain preparation records and an honest account of incidents and subsequent inspections, not merely a claim of low road mileage.

Fit and everyday limitations

Try all four seats and confirm that the rear arrangement meets actual passenger needs. A four-seat car cannot substitute for a five-seat family saloon when that extra place is required. Test access and comfort with the people who will use it, and consider the effects of specialised front seats on anyone sharing driving duties.

Check ordinary functions: climate control, cameras, displays, locks, phone connection and keys. A weight-focused derivative still has equipment that needs to work. Confirm the transfer and local availability of connected services. Ask for current VIN-specific recall and campaign information instead of assuming every update was completed because the car was owned by a collector.

Cost planning without contradictory estimates

Some routine tasks may overlap with another F90, while specific components and condition can change other bills. Neither saying all CS maintenance costs more nor saying it costs exactly the same is useful without a defined job. Obtain separate quotations for the actual service scope, wear items, diagnosis and repair. This guide contains no workshop invoice sample establishing one annual tariff.

Include insurance, tax, fuel, storage and any transport to a qualified workshop. Read warranty exclusions and the repair process rather than assuming limited production provides broader protection. A lightly used car still needs time-based attention and an appropriate storage routine. If circuit use is intended, add preparation, consumables, insurance and recovery as a separate budget.

Value, alternatives and evidence

Compare genuine examples by history, specification and condition, distinguishing asking prices from transactions. Limited production does not guarantee appreciation, liquidity or protection from a falling market. Obtain a dated independent valuation if needed for insurance, but do not treat it as a promise that another buyer will pay the same amount or reimburse running costs.

A conventional F90 M5 may better serve a five-seat or less specialised brief. Other fast saloons bring different compromises and service requirements, not an automatic hierarchy decided by rarity.
