The 288 GTO was built for Group B racing, although the category was cancelled before the car could compete. It used a twin-turbocharged version of the 308's V8, mounted longitudinally, and produced 400 metric horsepower. The body was wider and more aggressive, with flared arches, a deep front spoiler and a small integrated rear spoiler. It was the first Ferrari supercar of the modern era and the direct ancestor of the F40.
