The Elan brought Chapman's ideas into a usable road car. It had a steel backbone chassis, a separate fibreglass body, independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, and it weighed very little. The pop-up headlights were a signature, but the real achievement was the way the car rode and steered. The S1 established the formula that Lotus would develop through the original Elan's production life.
