The Eclat was Lotus moving upmarket. It used the Elite platform but a fastback body with a separate boot lid, and it was intended to compete with established grand tourers rather than lightweight sports cars. The slant-four engine was smooth and the cabin was more generous than anything Lotus had built before. It was a different kind of Lotus: quieter, heavier, and designed for distance.
