Identify the C204 Black Series correctly
The C63 AMG Black Series is a rear-wheel-drive, two-door C204 coupe powered by a 6,208 cc naturally aspirated V8. Its 517 PS is approximately 510 bhp, with 620 Nm. AMG quotes 4.2 seconds to 100 km/h and 300 km/h. This is not the standard C63, the later turbocharged C63 or a four-door model. The Black Series arrived in 2011 and this entry covers the 2011 to 2013 model period.
We have not driven this model for this article. This guide uses AMG's Black Series history, the PistonHeads W204 C63 buying guide and Mercedes' VIN recall service. The independent guide covers the wider W204 range, not a documented Black-Series fault pattern. Its age-related observations should direct inspection without creating a universal list of expected failures or an official production total.
MCT is not a conventional automatic
The Black Series uses AMG's MCT with a wet lockup clutch rather than a conventional torque converter. Do not apply a standard automatic's service assumptions or a later dual-clutch model's behaviour to this transmission. Ask a Mercedes specialist to assess engagement, shifts and stored information in suitable conditions and to explain the actual service history.
PistonHeads discusses overheating on facelift MCT cars. Use that as a prompt to check this car's cooling hardware, fluid history and previous diagnosis, not proof of a Black-Series-wide fault. Assess low-speed behaviour with a specialist and request diagnostic findings where a fault has been reported. A reset or restart does not explain an intermittent warning.
V8 inspection and early-W204 evidence
Observe the V8 cold and warm and inspect for oil and coolant leaks. The general guide discusses head-bolt and camshaft wear reports on earlier W204 engines. This Black Series arrived in 2011, so do not present those earlier-car reports as an established Black-Series failure pattern. If the car has unexplained noise, oil contamination or a top-end repair, ask for measurements, parts and specialist findings.
Check the coolant expansion area, radiator, hoses and evidence of overheating. As general inspection items, examine the oil-filler and cam-cover areas for residue or seepage. Trace any residue to its source rather than treating a freshly cleaned engine bay as proof of condition. Request annual service invoices and the reason for any engine, cooling or sensor work, without quoting historic repair prices as current estimates.
Cooling and aero equipment are part of the model
Confirm the Black-Series cooling and aerodynamic equipment from the build record. Inspect the front aero parts, rear wing or fitted aerodynamic package, undertrays and visible mounting points for contact and repair. The guide's Track Package cooling discussion is a reason to check the fitted system and radiator condition, not a reason to assume that every car has the same additional equipment.
A replaced wing, bonnet or undertray should come with a repair explanation and invoice. Do not judge composite or painted parts solely from a polished photograph. If access is limited, record which areas remained unseen. The model's more focused specification does not make underside contact or poor previous repairs irrelevant.
Suspension, steering and wheel condition
Inspect front and rear suspension arms, links, bushes and joints. Have the specialist check for creaks and free play as general inspection items. Ask for geometry measurements if the tyres show uneven wear or suspension parts have been replaced. Check steering response through a specialist evaluation rather than declaring every noise characteristic of the Black Series.
Examine wheels for cracks, buckles, corrosion and previous repairs. Confirm tyre specification, dates and wear on all four corners. A recently fitted set can conceal an older wear pattern without explaining its cause. Compare the physical findings with alignment and service records, and ask whether any non-standard wheels or suspension components were fitted.
Brakes, body and daily equipment
Measure the fitted brake discs and pads, check fluid history and ask for a current estimate where work is recommended. Do not infer standard or upgraded brake equipment from another C204. Inspect the underbody for scraping and the body for stone chips, panel-gap changes, overspray and signs of accident repair. The general guide's bodywork observations are inspection prompts rather than a promise of rust or damage on this car.
Test the seats, adjustment, windows, mirrors, lights, air conditioning and infotainment. PistonHeads mentions seat wear, adjustment and cabin rattles on wider W204 models. These are reasons to demonstrate equipment, not evidence that a Black Series will have the same cabin issues. Check headroom and access with the actual seat position rather than assuming the sport-oriented cabin fits every driver.
Service continuity and campaign evidence
Dated invoices should connect annual servicing, cooling work, MCT maintenance, alignment, brakes and any engine investigation. Ask about storage and recommissioning after long inactivity. Original parts included with the sale should be listed, and modifications should be explained with suitable documentation. Current quotations should come from the inspecting specialist rather than the older buying guide.
Use the VIN in Mercedes' recall service and obtain retailer confirmation of completed or outstanding work. A campaign affecting another W204 or build period does not prove that this chassis is affected.
Ask the specialist to list current measurements and any follow-up work separately, so a clean viewing does not conceal an unresolved inspection limitation.
We have not driven this model for this article. No present transaction price, future-value assurance or universal reliability claim is offered. Production totals remain unset because the cited sources do not establish an official global allocation. The strongest assessment combines correct model identity, a specialist inspection, measured consumables and a complete service file.
