Identify the F87 Competition
The M2 Competition replaced the original F87 M2's N55 engine with an S55 twin-turbocharged straight-six and associated changes. That is a significant distinction for servicing and inspection. It does not make the earlier car an illegitimate M model or an automatic inferior purchase. A buyer may prefer one configuration over another after trying it and understanding the different maintenance requirements.
This is a desk-researched ownership guide. We have not driven this model for this article. Its compact coupe format and manual or M DCT choices create a clear reason to shortlist it, but published enthusiasm does not determine personal fit. Check seat position, ride, rear access and the space available at home before treating its smaller dimensions as a guarantee of easy daily use.
Competition is not CS or G87
The F87 M2 CS is a separate derivative, while the later G87 M2 is another generation. A Competition with aftermarket carbon panels is not automatically a CS. Ask for the factory build record and identify the installed brakes, seats, suspension and gearbox. Claims about lighter parts or special equipment should be reconciled with invoices and the vehicle itself.
Registration dates can overlap model changes, and imports can have different original equipment. Record the country of first sale and VIN specification rather than borrowing every detail from a UK review. Confirm approval and insurance for any imported or modified example. A similar-looking car elsewhere does not establish that this vehicle has the same equipment or local legal status.
S55 history and tuning
Collect evidence of engine servicing, correct fluids, cooling work and the investigation of any warning messages. An inspecting specialist should examine the installation for leaks, damaged plumbing and signs of overheating. A recent oil change is useful but does not explain an earlier fault. Ask for the diagnosis and repair trail rather than treating a clear dashboard as the complete history.
Crank-hub concerns appear in discussion of the S55 family. The available coverage is not a controlled study showing a compulsory replacement interval or a precise failure rate for this model. Discuss the individual car's condition and tuning with a knowledgeable technician. An aftermarket hub does not guarantee the health of other engine components, while an original installation is not by itself proof of a developing problem.
Gearbox and driveline
Manual cars need checks of clutch engagement, flywheel behaviour and gear selection. For M DCT, assess cold and warm operation, reverse and low-speed movement as well as normal acceleration. Maintenance should follow guidance applicable to the actual unit and use, not an interval copied from another BMW gearbox. Any unusual noise or warning should be diagnosed before collection.
Ask about differential work and investigate persistent vibration or abnormal tyre wear. A seller describing the car as raw or demanding should not prevent an inspection of alignment, bushes, bearings and mounts. Factory intent and mechanical neglect are different things. If a fault needs further investigation, obtain that assessment or allow for genuine uncertainty rather than accepting the cheapest possible explanation.
Chassis, tyres and brakes
Identify the brake package fitted and have its remaining condition assessed. Different brake equipment can materially change replacement costs. Inspect wheels for impacts and verify tyre type, age and matching across the appropriate axle. Low mileage does not make old tyres fresh, and a high-performance badge does not compensate for an unsuitable replacement fitted to save money.
Review suspension modifications, including springs, dampers, alignment changes and any effects on clearance. A component list is not proof that the final setup is coherent. Ask who installed and adjusted it, what use it was intended for and whether the insurer has accepted it. Returning an altered car to standard can require more than purchasing a pair of springs.
Track history and ordinary practicality
Circuit use should be discussed openly. Obtain preparation, fluid and consumable records, plus details of incidents or subsequent repairs. A carefully maintained track-used car may be a more understandable purchase than an undocumented example, but its hours and demands still matter. The odometer alone does not describe wear from repeated sessions or aggressive driving.
Test ordinary equipment too: air conditioning, infotainment, windows, locks and both keys. Try rear access if passengers will use it and check the actual boot with the items you carry. The useful comparison is not only whether another car is faster, but whether this example can serve the owner's real routine without creating avoidable compromises.
Budget the individual car
Request written estimates separating routine servicing, worn consumables, diagnosis and repair. Add insurance, tax, fuel and any transport to a specialist. This guide does not contain a current workshop quotation sample, so it avoids a universal annual budget or a presumed discount from independent servicing. Compare actual scope and parts rather than two prices both described vaguely as a major service.
Market comparisons should match derivative, transmission, age, condition and history. A seller's asking price is not a completed sale, and a CS advertisement is not evidence of what a Competition will be worth. There is no claim here that values have bottomed or that a manual must become collectible. Keep sufficient funds for ownership even if resale proves slower or less rewarding than hoped.
Alternatives and evidence
The original F87 M2 offers a different engine proposition within related packaging. An F80 M3 adds rear-door practicality, while a Cayman changes layout and passenger capacity. Compare the actual vehicles and support plans rather than assuming the Competition is the only authentic or worthwhile version of a compact M car.
Published generation history and the S55 buying guide below inform these distinctions. They do not certify a specific chassis or establish measured reliability. Verify factory specification, tuning, maintenance and accident history, then commission an appropriate independent inspection. The goal is a usable car with understood risks, not a purchase justified by an unsupported investment story.
